At BCW Treatments, we’re proud to be at the forefront of surface technology. One of our most advanced offerings is TiZr passivation, a smart, sustainable solution that’s helping manufacturers across a range of sectors improving corrosion resistance and bonding strength without relying on harmful chemicals.

We work closely with customers in automotive, aerospace, leisure and security technology, whilst being able to support other industries such as defence, construction and medical. We help improve components longevity and quality while meeting today’s demanding performance and environmental standards.

Let’s take a closer look at what makes TiZr conversion treatments so effective, where it’s used, and what you should consider when choosing it for your next project.

What is TiZr?

TiZr, stands for Titanium-Zirconium, is a chromium-free surface treatment primarily used on non-ferrous metals, especially aluminium. It replaces the natural oxide layer on the metal with a thin, controlled oxide film that improves both corrosion resistance and adhesion for bonding or painting.

At BCW, we apply TiZr to a wide range of component types, including:

  • Castings
  • Pressings
  • Extrusions

Our purpose-built facility, commissioned in 2019, is equipped with advanced quality systems including X-ray Fluorescence and mechanical testing. Every part we process is fully traceable and quality assured.

Why Choose TiZr?

As industries move away from traditional finishes, TiZr has emerged as a reliable, eco-conscious alternative. Here’s why it’s such a popular choice:

Stronger Bonding

TiZr provides a consistent surface that promotes excellent adhesion and delivers strong reliable bonding applications. This has been proven through rigorous customer validations, including Lap Shear and T-Peel testing.

Enhanced Corrosion Resistance

TiZr significantly improves corrosion resistance, particularly when used as part of a coating system with a topcoat. It’s ideal for protecting lightweight metals in harsh environments.

Improved Weldability

The clean oxide layer produced by the TiZr process supports more consistent, cleaner welds, especially when using modern techniques such as laser or MIG welding.

Environmentally Responsible

Unlike traditional methods, TiZr is chromium free, making it safer for people and the environment. The process operates at ambient temperature, reduces energy consumption, and generates minimal waste. That helps drive sustainability goals and profitability.

Things to Consider

Like any technical process, TiZr has a few considerations to bear in mind:

It’s effectiveness depends on tight process controls, including bath chemistry, pH, temperature, and immersion time.

It’s not a standalone barrier. Although TiZr improves corrosion resistance, it is usually used alongside an adhesive or paint to achieve long-term protection.

TiZr Applications

We’ve partnered with major manufacturers, including Jaguar Land Rover, to test and validate our TiZr process. Our system has been independently verified to meet STJLR.50.5002, following an extensive programme of in-house and external testing.

Industries Benefiting from TiZr Coating:

Automotive

TiZr is used to prepare aluminium components for bonding and paint applications in modern vehicle production, particularly vehicles where lightweight materials are essential.

Aerospace

The process is ideal for high-performance bonding and corrosion resistance in airframe and structural components.

Electronics & Medical

TiZr supports precision bonding and surface reliability in compact, finely machined metal parts.

Sustainable Manufacturing

For manufacturers seeking to reduce environmental impact without compromising quality, TiZr is a forward-thinking choice.
