What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a method of applying a protective and decorative finish to various surfaces including aluminium machined components. Unlike traditional liquid paint, which is applied as a wet substance and then dries, powder coating involves applying a dry powder onto the surface and then curing it under heat to form a hard and durable finish.

The powder used in powder coating is typically made of finely ground particles of pigment and resin. It may also contain additives such as flow agents, levelling agents, and curing agents to enhance performance and application properties.

Powder coating and the environment

As we’ve mentioned, we prioritise the environment in everything we do. Here are some of the ways that powder coating is an ally to the environment:

• Powder coating doesn’t emit volatile organic compounds (VOC) unlike liquid coatings which can contribute to air pollution
• Dry powder is applied electrostatically on the surface of the component and excess powder can be collected after this process which minimises waste
• Powder coating eliminates the need for solvents which can be hazardous for human health and the environment
• Powder coating treatments requires lower curing temperatures compared to liquid coatings and this results in reduced energy consumption

Fully automated Pre-treatment.

• Heavy duty overhead conveyor with a load capability of 85Kg/Metre.
• Maximum working envelope of 1.8m high x 0.8m wide x 1.8m inline.

5-stage pre-treatment with drying oven.

• Industry 4.0 to monitor live and historic trends.
• Waste heat recovery system to utilise heat from the ovens to aid heating of the pre-treatment process tanks reducing energy used.
• Latest XRF to measure coating weights of the nano coating applied during the pre-treatment process.

Fully automated powder coating process

• Reciprocators with a total of 16 guns for maximum transfer efficiency and coating uniformity.
• Full colour changes in under 10 minutes.
• Fluidised container to ensure powder is in optimum condition prior to application ensuring the best possible finish.
• 3D part detection to determine length and width of the parts to be sprayed.
