CNC Machinist

BCW Design & Manufacture is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist. To safely and effectively operate CNC machinery to manufacture precision-engineered components to exacting quality standards. The role involves programming, setting, and operating machines, interpreting technical drawings, performing quality checks, and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement within the machining department.

Specific Responsibilities

Machine Setup & Operation:

  • Set up and operate CNC machines (milling, turning, grinding, etc.) based on technical drawings and production instructions.
  • Load programs and adjust offsets, tooling, and fixtures as required

Programming & Editing:

  • Input, modify, or write CNC programs (using Fanuc, Heidenhain, etc.) for production runs.
  • Support the development of new machining processes and prototypes.

Quality & Inspection:

  • Carry out first-off and in-process inspection using precision instruments (verniers, micrometres, height gauges, CMM, etc.).
  • Ensure machined components meet dimensional and surface finish specifications.
  • Complete quality documentation, including ISIRs or control plans if applicable.

Tooling & Maintenance:

  • Monitor tool wear, replace inserts, and maintain tool life logs.
  • Perform basic machine maintenance and report defects.

Collaboration:

  • Liaise with Quality, Engineering, and Production Control departments to resolve machining issues and support production flow.
  • Assist apprentices or junior team members with training and mentoring.

Health & Safety:

  • Adhere to all company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Operate machinery and equipment in a safe and responsible manner at all times.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Suggest improvements to machining efficiency, tool life, or part quality.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Time-served or formally trained CNC Machinist with 3+ years of shop-floor experience
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings (ISO/EU standards or BS8888)
  • Skilled in programming and troubleshooting CNC controls (e.g., Fanuc, Heidenhain)
  • Understanding of cutting speeds, feeds, materials, and tool paths
  • Comfortable working to tight tolerances (e.g., +/- 0.01 mm)
  • Capable of working independently or in a team in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds in CNC Machining / Mechanical Engineering
  • Completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship
  • Additional CNC programming certification (optional)

The position is permanent, working 39 hours per week, as this is a nights position, the hourly rate will have a shift allowance uplift

Nights 4.30pm - 2.45am Monday to Thursday
